Occupying a space where spiritualism and music converge, for nearly 20 years, Kanho Yakushiji has been feeding Zen principles into a genre-bending musical niche. The Japanese monk and musician has generated a vast following in East Asia, popularised as a “Buddhist singer” for his lyric interpretations of ancient scriptures. Most prominently, the words carried by the Heart Sutra. In short film Tomorrow is Today, from NOWNESS series Power of Performance, director Ameya Jane explores Kanho Yakushiji’s world, through his spiritual practice and approach to popular music.
