Whether it’s a tongue-in-cheek ode to Los Angeles shot on sun-kissed 35mm, or a big-budget commercial filmed with basketball legend Kobe Bryant (RIP) that nods to the sci-fi trappings of television series Westworld, the works of Australian director Jonathon Lim all exhibit flashes of humour and approachability that are a reflection of his character behind the camera.

Fully embedded in contemporary culture and frequent collaborator with Asian hip-hop collective 88 Rising, Lim directed the seminal feature-length documentary “Asia Rising” filmed over multiple countries and, which, over the course of its hour-long run time, showcased the evolution of Asian hip-hop and how the genre has exploded across the world. It was released to huge acclaim with features in publications including Forbes and Rolling Stone, and is a testament to Lim’s ability to deftly capture the essence behind so many larger-than-life characters, as well as the ideology that drives the collective scene as a whole!
